Capacity Building Workshop on Life Cycle Assessment & Management for Sustainability • Colombo, Sri Lanka • 23-25 February 2015

The 3-day workshop on “Capacity Building on Life Cycle Assessment and Management for Sustainability”, was organized by LCADeSNet – Life Cycle Assessment and Design for Sustainability Network in Sri Lanka along with Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment with funding from the EC. It gathered a total of about 120 participants from Sri Lankan government and public bodies, industries and academia. The workshop set the building blocks for an Operational LCA Roadmap for Sri Lanka.

The training was led by Dr. Hongtao Wang, Associate Professor of Sichuan University China, helped by Janet Salem (UNEP Asia Pacific) and Dr. Sanjeevan Bajaj (FICCI, India). Academic professors also displayed willingness to put better emphasis on LCA in their curriculum. The sessions were chaired by top senior officials from Industry and Public sectors. The operational LCA roadmap for Sri Lanka is the main outcome the workshop; it aims at promoting LCA in policy and sharing its industrial applications and benefits. Dr Thusitha Sugtahapala – Director General of Sustainable Energy Authority of Sri Lanka – led the roadmap preparation and conclusion. The next steps following the workshop are to finalize the LCA roadmap, to present it to stakeholders and to initiate research projects to support industrial LCA needs. This training got financial support from the EC through UNEP and FICCI.
