Roundtable Discussion • Rome, Italy • 11-13 November 2013

The 19th SETAC Europe LCA Case study Symposium was held in Rome on 11-13 November 2013 and was attended by about 200 participants from 25 countries, with an important contribution from the industrial sector. Jointly organised with ISIE (International Society for Industrial Ecology), the symposium offered an interdisciplinary forum for discussing the theme “LCA in market, research and policy: harmonisation beyond standardization”.

The symposium was also enriched by a high number of special events, which included: a workshop on Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment and its application in the construction sector; a workshop on the application of LCA in the food sector; a special session on guidance documents for performing LCA and a special session on LCA as a tool for supporting policies, the latter organized by the International Society for Industrial ecology (ISIE). The Symposium was closed with a Round Table on the role of harmonisation activities at the international level, with the participation of key players from industrial, academic and governmental organisations.

The Life Cycle Initiative participated in the final Roundtable discussion on “Harmonisation beyond Standardisation”, and presenting the status of one of its flagship projects (on LCIA indicators). In addition, two new publications of the Initiative, on “Knowledge Mining from LCA applications on Packaging in the Food and Beverage sector” and “Methodological Sheets on Social LCA”, were launched during the Symposium.

Next year’s symposium will be held in Novi Sad (Serbia): do not miss the opportunity to send contributions on LCA applications!
