First UNEP Train-the-Trainer Workshop on Environmental Footprinting

Paris, November 2012

UNEP, with the technical support from two well recognized organizations (the University ETH Zurich and the World Resource Institute) organized the first UNEP train-the-trainer workshop on product environmental footprinting along its life cycle (from the extraction through the transformation, transportation, use and end–of-life), focusing this time on water footprinting and carbon footprint. This activity is part of a 3-year project ‘Integrating resource efficiency in international supply chains’ funded by the European Commission and implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme from 2012 through 2014. Those participating in the train-of-trainers workshop learned the key steps in developing an environmental footprint inventory, complete hands-on GHG emissions and water use calculation exercises, practice training skills, and learn how to replicate and facilitate their own training workshops in developing countries and emerging economies. The oral and written exam and evaluation are still undergoing; by passing them, the participants will earn a Trainer Certificate.

Participants include key partners from the UNEP and UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative’s regional networks including countries such as Turkey, Russia, India, South Africa and China. The setup of a network of regional experts will be a key outcome of the train-the-trainer workshop. Future related activities will be implemented in developing countries and emerging economies (possibly first in Argentina, India and Nigeria).

The UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative is celebrating its ten year anniversary during the World Summit for Sustainable Development in Rio+20 with a presentation on ‘Greening the Economy through Life Cycle Thinking’ at the UN Global Compact /US EPA Forum on Building Markets for Greener Products to be held on 17 June (11:00 to 12:30). Major achievements of the past 10 years and highlights of the Phase III of the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative (2012-2016) will be introduced by Cassia Ugaya, Member of the International Life Cycle Board of the UNEP and SETAC Life Cycle Initiative, co-Founder of the Ibero American Life Cycle Network and the Brazilian Life Cycle Association and Professor at Federal Technological University of Parana (UTFPR).

UNEP/SETAC Training Workshop on Global Guidance Principles for LCA Databases. Bangkok, Thailand – 2012.

The UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative is organizing a ‘Global Guidance Principles for LCA Databases’ Training Workshop on 30 June in Bangkok, Thailand. This workshop takes place back-to-back the ISO TC 207 plenary meetings where an introduction of the ‘Global Guidance Principles for LCA Databases’ will be provided on 29 June for the ISO delegates. The target audience of the Workshop on 30 June consists of Thailand LCA practitioners as well as potential LCA database managers and data providers. The aim of the workshop is to present and discuss the guiding actions on how LCA data could be generated and how unit process could be setup and datasets aggregated especially in Thailand following the internationally agreed principles presented in the UNEP/SETAC Global Guidance Principles for LCA Databases. The Global Guidance Principles published in 2011 following the ‘Shonan Guidance Principles’ Workshop (January 2011) represent a milestone in the harmonization of how datasets are developed and how life cycle assessment databases are created, managed and used in an interoperable and transparent manner by LCA practitioners worldwide.

UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative’s Accomplishments and Challenges in Phases I & II and Expectations for Phase III

UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative Mirror Group Meeting, Brussels, 16 Feb 2012

In order to build a relevant strategy for the third phase, stakeholder engagement activities were undertaken by the Initiative from July 2011 to February 2012. In addition to surveys and interviews, a ‘mirror group’ of thought leaders was established, with representatives from business, government, academia and civil society from different regions of the world. The members of the mirror group provided thoughtful feedback regarding the achievements and shortcomings of the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative during the first two phases, as well as their ideas and expectations during the third phase and beyond Rio+20 (2012-2017). If your would like to download the summary of the findings and results of previous surveys as well as first insights in the plans for phase III please click here.
