Social and environmental impacts result not only from the company's operations, but also from other activities throughout the whole life cycle of a product i.e. up- and down-stream impacts from suppliers and users. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a tool to analyse the social and environmental burden of products at all stages of their life cycle. It helps companies to decide to what extent problems associated with the final product outside the organization should be integrated into the internal decision-making process. It draws on information that is sometimes hard to gather and assess. It also offers analytical insight helpful for product design-decisions considering life-cycle-wide impacts from the beginning.
