New Publication! Product Sustainability Information

Ensuring sustainable consumption and production should take a life cycle approach, and central to this is the development of product sustainability information (PSI). The Life Cycle Initiative has recently published a report: “Product Sustainability Information - State of Play and Way Forward”. This report analyses information and communication about PSI. It provides an overview of the current state in the area of PSI, analyses the key trends, drivers and challenges in this field, and draws policy recommendations on how to facilitate better decision-making on the sustainability aspects of products.

You can access the report through this link.

Welcome to our newest Life Cycle Initiative Secretariat Team Member

We are pleased to announce that a new colleague has recently joined the Life Cycle Initiative: Dr. Feng Wang started working in the UNEP office in Paris in August 2015. Feng will serve as a Programme Officer and will manage projects in the areas of Life Cycle Thinking and Sustainable Consumption and Production. Feng holds a Doctor Degree from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, on topics of eco-design and waste management of obsolete products. Before joining UNEP, he worked as a researcher in the United Nations University in Germany and a visiting researcher in Statistics Netherlands, to carry out projects on quantifying global flows and environmental impact of electronic waste, and to provide policy recommendations and technical solutions for developing countries. Feng has also worked as an environmental engineer in the recycling sector in China to set up pilot plants for emerging waste streams, and served as a trainer for several intergovernmental training programs and educational courses.

You can meet him in person at the LCM conference in Bordeaux.

Flagship Activity Feedback - A selection

1) Global Principles and Practices for Hotspots Analysis (Flagship 3a)

Phase 2 of the project has now been agreed, and it covers the development and agreement of the global methodological framework for hotspots analysis and the guidance on using the information derived from hotspots analysis. The project team is in discussion about the format and arrangements for pilot projects and technical workshops, in order to test and finalise the global guidance.

2) Data and Database Management (Flagship 2a)

Version 3.4 of the training kit “Global Guidance Principles on LCA data and database“ is undergoing review before publication. This kit can provide the trainers with a self-contained resource for teaching the practical use of the GGP.
A final draft version of the Global Assessment Report is in preparation, and a draft module is being created towards the development of a national LCI database.
UNEP and SETAC co-organized the Workshop on Global Guidance Principles on LCA Database Management, held during CILCA, 2015, in Lima, Peru on July 13, 2015. The training was followed by a Regional Roadmap discussion session held on 14 July. More details below on event flashback.

Flashback: Recent Life Cycle Initiative Events & Activity

1) Training on Global Guidance Principles (GGP) for LCA databases and roadmap for LCA database in Latin America, Peru

UNEP and SETAC co-organized the Workshop on Global Guidance Principles on LCA Database Management, held during CILCA, 2015, in Lima, Peru on July 13, 2015.  About 40 organizations’ representatives participated from over 13 countries, including Latin America and Caribbean countries, Spain, Portugal and India. Hands-on training was performed to support the development and management of LCA databases in the region.

The training was followed by a Regional Roadmap discussion session held on 14 July. Mexico, Brazil and Chile are the most advanced countries in the region in terms of LCA databases development, and they were asked to lead a proposal for a regional LC platform. Such platform would need to be consistent with the Global Network agreements and include key aspects such as governments’ involvement, regional training on IT aspects for raw data mining and LCA data management, and incentives for LCA data sharing.

2) CILCA 2015 (the 6th Conference on Life Cycle Assessment in Latin America) in Lima, Peru

The UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative presented and chaired several sessions at the CILCA during 13-16 July in Peru. Three presentations were given on the topics of regional stakeholder consultation on the GGP on LCA database management, the Guidance on Organizational LCA (O-LCA) and assessing impacts of water use in LCA. The O-LCA Guidance document was launched for the first time in the Latin America region. Many participants registered for the Initiative newsletter at the booth, and requested the printed copies of reports. During the conference, the Initiative was often cited and praised by participants from academia, governments and industries for its regional network support efforts.
