Call for datasets review: Invitation to review datasets from emerging economies

UNEP supports the practical development of national LCA databases in line with the Global Guidance Principles for LCA databases in selected emerging economies. Within this project, the co-chairs of the Flagship on Life Cycle Data are coordinating a practical exercise on the review of datasets in three countries: Brazil, Malaysia and Thailand. The datasets that will be reviewed are the ones that are considered to be crucial for the national databases in these countries. For this endeavor we need two reviewers per dataset, one who looks at the data with a sector view and one who does so from a methodology eye. The timing of this exercise is maximum a month in August/September 2015. Reviewers will be asked to assess list criteria, and will sign a Non-Disclosure-Agreement (NDA). Become one of the reviewers and participate to the progress towards more and better quality LCA data globally.

If you are interested; please contact the review coordinators Bruce Vigon and Guido Sonnemann. This call is open until 15 July 2015

A Look Inside - Profiling Our Sponsors & Partners

Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI)

Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) is India’s apex industry association with direct and indirect membership of over 250,000 companies. A non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation, FICCI articulates the views and concerns of Indian industry and plays a leading role in policy debates that are at the forefront of social, economic and political change in India. FICCI is a strategic partner of UNEP-SETAC Life Cycle Initiative and FICCI Quality Forum is playing a pioneering role in building capacity on Life Cycle Assessment & Management through various programmes, technical services and support for pilot projects in India. The annual Indian Conference on Life Cycle Management (ILCM) is a FICCI event and over the last four years, ILCM has served as the most significant national platform for discussion on latest global developments in Life Cycle Thinking (LCT), Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Environmental LCA and Life Cycle Management (LCM) maturity models (see our Calendar, Announcements). FICCI also operates a freely accessible, comprehensive, information and knowledge sharing platform (India LCA Alliance, ILCAA) to create awareness and increase understanding on Life Cycle Thinking in India. At ILCAA, we seek to build capacity among industries, government, civil society and NGOs in India on Life Cycle concepts and tools.

1) International cooperation in LCA databases meeting in Barcelona

UNEP organized and chaired a meeting on international cooperation in LCA databases on May 6th, 2015 in Barcelona. The discussion was well attended and raised significant interest among some key players in the commercial LC database arena (ecoinvent, thinkstep, GreenDelta, BONSAI) as well as the European Commission and countries currently sharing their experiences in international collaboration and technical support for national LCA databases (Malaysia; Thailand; Brazil). Concrete steps were discussed and further progress is expected on one collaborative workshop in LCM Bordeaux on organizing international peer reviews of LCA databases and on agreeing criteria to assess conformance against the Global Guidance Principles on LCA databases. Consult the Flagship page.

2) Workshop sessions on Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) indicators in Barcelona

UNEP and SETAC co-organized the pre-Pellston workshop on Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) on 7-8 May, 2015 in Barcelona.

This consultation workshop was well attended by stakeholders from different sectors. Different points namely the ISO requirements on LCIA, the potential linking of environmental and socio-economic assessments and the potential links between impact indicators and international processes such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were discussed. The issue of linking geographic information and intensity levels, when dealing with spatially dependent impact categories (land use, water use), was raised. A common case study on rice production and consumption in different places in the world will be used to test practicality and relevance of consensus impact indicators. Consult the Flagship page.
