LC Net Focus

1) UNEP/SETAC special sessions at Ecobalance (Japan) and LCA XIV/LCA Food 2014 (USA)

The UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative will be particularly active in outreach activities at these two important conferences in October.

LCA XIV is taking place in San Francisco the 6-8 October and will be followed this year by the 9th LCA Food conference the 8-10 October. Representatives from the Initiative will be giving presentations on 'Global Hotspots Analysis: mapping of methodologies and next steps*', 'Organizational LCA' and 'Building consensus for LCIA indicators' during LCA XIV and LCA Food 2014. This will be a great opportunity for all stakeholders to learn more about our activities. In addition, the 26th International Life Cycle Board will be held on 9 Oct.

*Don't forget to take part in the Global Hotspots Analysis mapping exercise
before the 2nd of July as announced in the May/June LC Net.

The 11th annual Ecobalance conference will take place from 27-30 October in Tsukuba City Japan. Atsushi Inaba and Matthias Finkbeiner will chair the special Life Cycle Initiative session at  entitled ‘The Practical Challenge for Sustainable Industry – Organizational LCA (O-LCA): Concepts and Methodologies’ on 29 October. Announcements

1) LCA Compendium- The Complete World of Life Cycle Assessment released

The first volume of a major new book series: LCA Compendium -The Complete World of Life Cycle Assessment, edited by Walter Klöpffer, and Mary Ann Curran, has been released and is now available at www.springer.com.

This volume, entitled "Background and Future Prospects in Life Cycle Assessment" offers experts’ perspectives on state-of-the-art LCA practice, including both strengths and limitations, introduces LCA in a comprehensive manner, illuminating all aspects of LCA practice and application in detail and provides historical information and references on the fundamentals of LCA practice and future development.

The LCA Compendium Book Series will discuss the main drivers in LCA (SETAC, UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative, etc.), the strengths and limitations of LCA, the LCA phases as defined by ISO standards, specific applications of LCA, Life Cycle Management (LCM) and Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA). Further volumes, which are closely related to these themes will cover exemplary LCA studies ordered according to the importance of the fields of application. They will also present new insights and new developments and will keep the whole work current. The aim of the series is to provide a well-structured treatise of the field of LCA to give orientation and guidance through detailed descriptions on all steps necessary to conduct an LCA study according to the state of the art and in full agreement with the standards.

2) LCA featured in Science Magazine

Life Cycle Assessment and other life cycle approaches received significant attention in the June 6th edition of Science magazine "Rethinking the Global Supply Chain".

In particular, the review paper on "Emerging approaches, challenges and opportunities in life cycle assessment" by Stefanie Hellweg (ETH) and Llorenç Mila i Canals (UNEP) reflects on the widening field of application of LCA and life cycle approaches. It demonstrates the benefits that the holistic perspective of Life Cycle Approaches bring to the decision-maker, as traditionally applied to products but more recently used to analyse organisations, lifestyles or even whole regions or countries.

The article also explains the important role that the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative has played and is playing in "mainstreaming" Life Cycle Thinking. Notably it reviews the Intiative's contribution in some of the key challenges around data, methodological development and implementation tools.

3) Life Cycle Impact Assessment Indicators

The Life Cycle Initiative team on Life Cycle Impact Assessment has just published a global guidance paper. This paper is freely available here (Jolliet, Frischknecht et al. 2014 Global guidance on environmental life cycle impact assessment indicators: findings of the scoping phase, published in the Int J LCA Vol. 19).

4) SETAC Europe's 20th LCA Case Study Symposium to be held in Serbia

SETAC Europe is pleased to announce its 20th LCA Case Study Symposium, to be held 24-26 November 2014 in Novi Sad, Serbia: LCA in promoting eco-innovation and sustainability: education, research and application.

The symposium’s main purpose is to develop an intensive discussion on how LCA can contribute to innovation and enhance the (re)design of new and existing products and services, by respecting eco-design principles. This will contribute to sustainable development through improved environmental performances. The discussion should comprise educational, research and industrial aspects. A special focus goes to identifying barriers and proposing solutions for improving the application of LCA in small and medium-sized enterprises, underlining the potential benefits.

Abstract submission is currently open, deadline 15 September. Learn more.
