LC Net Focus

1) Special invitation to participate for survey response - A mapping of 'Hotspots Analysis Methodologies' in support of the Global Guidance on Hotposts Analysis development

UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative has launched a survey to identify different hotspots analysis methodologies that are being developed and used around the globe. The survey will provide input to the analysis of the scope of such methodologies, issues covered, as well as application within emerging economies and by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). In addition, the results of this survey will help identify the key stakeholders and process steps to facilitate the development of global guidance on hotspot analysis methodologies.

We would kindly like to invite you to share your knowledge of hotspot analysis methodologies. To participate, please click here. The deadline for submission is the  1st July

The final report will be published as UNEP/SETAC publication and disseminated worldwide. Respondents will receive a draft report before it is being finalized to provide further feedback. As a token of our appreciation, respondents will be listed in the acknowledgements page.

Announcements

1) International standard on the Water Footprint, ISO 14046 approved by the international committee ISO/TC 207/SC5 in Panama, May 2014

This work received valuable and substantive contributions from UNEP/SETAC project group members on 'water use in LCA (WULCA)' during the development of the standard. As announced by ISO, ISO 14046 sets the principles, requirements and guidelines for the assessment of the Water Footprint of products, processes and organisations, starting from the assessment of its life cycle. The main goal is to assess the environmental impact of organisations' activities on water, thus improving the management of this scarce resource. ISO 14046 has raised, from the beginning, considerable interest in organisations, governments, multinationals and other parties involved due to the global increasing demand of water. A strong interest came also from developing countries, who are faced with a progressive water shortage and loss of water quality. The ISO/TC 207 SC 5 WG8 is currently working on ISO/TR 14073 which will give some examples of applications of ISO. UNEP congratulates the ISO/TC 207 SC 5 WG8 for the work done during the last 5 years and confirms its continued support in the capacity building efforts, dissemination and promotion of this important standard especially in the developing world.

2) News on the recently launched Social LCA Alliance

Members of the task force launched in 2014 the Social LC Alliance (social-LCA.org) which promotes, inter alia, the networking on social LCA and its methodological sheets. Over 8200 downloads have been registered since April 2014. Since the launch of the website a process of engagement newcomers has been setup and the growth of the network interested in S-LCA and its methodological sheets is expected.

If you are interested in the Social LCA Alliance please click here or send an email to [email protected].

3) LCA Practitioners on the interactive map!

During the recently held SETAC Europe 24th Annual Meeting, the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative was present for the first time with its own booth. As part of the Life Cycle Initiative's enhanced outreach and communications activities, the booth was organised to promote the Life Cycle Initiative, especially to newcomers in the LCA field. The booth was highly frequented by both people familiar with the Life Cycle Initiative, as well as those who had not heard about it before. Thanks to a concerted effort of the communications team of the Initiative, visitors registered on our own interactive map that allows them to identify themselves as active LCA practitioners in their area, and see who else in their countries are working in this field.

The booth was also used as the central meeting point for stakeholders already affiliated with the Initiative, greatly facilitating discussions around the Life Cycle Initiative and its projects. As Jim Fava, co-chair of the phase 3 UNEP/SETAC flagship project group on 'hotspot analysis methodologies', said: "This is really great! Thanks to the booth I've been talking to more people than ever before during similar conferences!"
